– Exploring the benefits of betel leaf as a natural antiseptic–
Jakarta, October 16, 2017 — Women need to protect the female area (genital intimate organs) because this area is closely related to the reproductive organs in the pelvis. Infection or disease in the outer female area can spread inside and have a more serious impact. One of them is vaginal discharge. There are two types of discharges, there are physiological (normal) and pathological (signs of disease).
Dr. Rino Bonti Tri H. Shanti, SpOG from Hermina Jatinegara Hospital, explained that vaginal discharge is one of the most reasons why women go to obstetrician-specific doctors. The cause of vaginal discharge can be due to infection or non-infection. The cervix normally secretes clear, clean, not excessive and does not cause complaints. Normal vaginal discharge generally occurs before the fertile period.
But when vaginal discharge is accompanied by itching, unpleasant smell and redness or a burning sensation and pain, we must be alert because it is a sign of vaginal infection. Vaginal infections can be caused by fungus (candida), dangerous bacteria, or trichomoniasis parasites. Infection in the vagina can continue into the ovaries and cause blockages. Vaginal discharge is also associated with sexually transmitted infections, the impact of using contraceptives in the womb or because of malignancy.
While the causes of non-infectious vaginal discharge include extraneous objects in the vagina, cervical polyps, allergic reactions or due to poor hygiene issues in the feminine area. There are times when the cleanliness of female sex organs needs extra attention during menstruation. At the moment hygiene care is more intensive.
Vagina discharge is not normal either due to infection or non-injection starts from the cleanliness of the feminine area that is not well maintained. “The initial trigger is the condition of humid intimate organs, so it becomes a good medium for fungus to grow. Cleaning intimate areas should not use soap because it is alkaline. Better with plain water or use a special vaginal cleaning fluid with an appropriate pH, “explained dr. Bonti in Media Gathering “The Importance of Maintaining and Caring for the intimate area,” which was held by Resik V Godokan Sirih from PT Kino Indonesia Tbk.
Dr. Bonti also suggested that you should avoid douching, which is to spray special fluids into the vagina. It’s better to be cleaned with water or a special liquid for safe sex organs, “said dr. Bonti Vaginal douching is only given for severe infections in the vagina, and even then, it is not used routinely.
Dr. Irmanida Batubara from the Tropical Biopharma Study Center of IPB added, because one of the causes of vaginal discharge is a bacterial infection, it can be overcome by controlling bacterial growth in intimate organs. Some natural ingredients can be used as an antiseptic and antibacterial. One of them is betel leaf. Empirically, betel leaf has been known since ancient times to have efficacy as a traditional medicine, one of them is used as an antiseptic and antibacterial liquid in intimate organs.
Betel leaf has a bacteriocyte profile, which only inhibits bacterial growth. The results showed that betel leaf had MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration).
“It must be distinguished from bactericidal. Bactericidal is the ability to kill bacteria. And this bactericidal antiseptic fluid is not recommended for the vagina because it can destroy all bacteria, including good bacteria. Because in the area of femininity normally grows bacteria so what must be maintained is to control the number of harmful bacteria, “said Irma.
The bioactive content of betel leaf which has antibacterial feature is essential oil. Essential oils contain compounds chavibetol (betelphenol), catechol, cadinene, carvacrol, caryophyllene, chavicol, 1.8-cineol, estragole, eugenol, methyleugenol, pyrocatechin, terpinyl acetate etc. All are antibacterial in various strains including E. coli, Streptococcus pyogenes, and S. aureus. Besides being antibacterial, betel leaf is also antifungal.
